At 79, hospital housekeeper is heart, soul of fourth floor

first_imgThe housekeeper on the fourth floor has been cleaning patients’ rooms at Valley Presbyterian Hospital for 47 years. She’s 79 and never had a day of college, but there are plenty of people at the hospital in Van Nuys who will tell you that Audrey Nelson is as important to them as any doctor, nurse or administrator. She walked into the hospital in 1959 as a single mom looking for a job – any job – to support her two young children, and she stayed to become the heart and soul of the place. Director of inspiration, some say. “We get people checking in who request one of Audrey’s rooms specifically,” says Harry Davis, director of nuitrition and environmental services. “It’s like they’re making restaurant reservations and want to sit at Audrey’s table.” Leslie Rouff has been both a patient and a visitor at Valley Presbyterian, and she thinks she knows why Audrey – who cleans 32 rooms, plus the fourth-floor nurses’ station and utility room – is so popular. When you hurt and feel rotten, when everyone around you seems to busy to stop and talk, the housekeeper always makes time for you, Rouff says. When you see her scrubbing the sinks and vacuuming the floors – and find out how long she’s been at it, how old she is – well, your own aches and pains don’t feel quite so bad. “She’s an absolute inspiration to everyone in those rooms, always going the extra mile for you and your family at tough, emotional times.” That’s how you get patients to ask for you by name when they’re checking in. She didn’t care what she had to do – empty bed pans or scrub floors; she needed the job, Audrey told the man doing the hiring back in 1959. “As tired and worn out as I was, he thought I was capable and told me to start on Monday,” Audrey said. She started out as an attendant, emptying bed pans and managing supplies, and then worked her way up to a senior aide for a couple of years. But budget cuts put her back to cleaning rooms, which she doesn’t mind one bit. You learn a lot about people when the’re lying in a hospital bed feeling vulnerable and needing a shot of what you’re offering – inspiration. “I’ve met rich people, poor people and not-so-pleasant people,” Audrey said. “They all open up if you show them you care.” When her son and daughter graduated from high school, Audrey had them work with her at the hospital for a summer so they could see how she supported them. “I wanted them to learn about caring and responsibility,” she said. “There’s no better place to do that than a hospital.” With that, the director of inspiration had to get back to work Monday. Two new patients were checking in, and she had to change the sheets, mop the bathroom floor, scrub the sink, wipe the walls, clean the windows and blinds, and vacuum the floor. Even with 80 staring her in the face, Audrey has no plans to quit. “As long as the good Lord lets me, I’ll keep working,” she said, getting ready to meet some new patients. Fanit Uses Sets Gameplay to Music

Fans support their favorite artists and bands by purchasing badges. 100% of the money for the badges go to the artists, according to the company’s PR representative. As the fan purchases badges and engages in recommendation actions, they earn “rank.” That rank gives the fan a chance at “superfan” status and, according to the company, creates opportunities for interactions with the listener’s favorite musicians. “Music fans can now be forever recognized for when they discover great music. As they prove their status as a fan they earn rank, which is used to show artists who the biggest fans really are. Fanit turns the anonymous music listener into an active participant in their favorite music.”The southern California-based company is led by Jason Schultz, of Ambistia business incubation lab.Fanit launched in preview mode at last month’s Coachella music festival in 2010. After this preview, reflecting user input, the interface was updated the game mechanics were refined and it has now relaunched. Fanit fans can elect to follow other fans and get their list of promoted music and bands. With its emphasis on recommendation versus in-site play (although there are samples you can listen to) it resembles another site we recently wrote about, Bee.tv. The implied dialogue between musician and fan as well as between fan and fan adds an extra dimension that other music recommendation services, like Pandora and Last.fm, lack. Whether the implied becomes actual might make the difference between a good idea and a popular service. last_img read more

Army Intelligence grapples with doping in recruitment rally in Alwar

first_imgThe Military Intelligence (MI) recovered large number of drugs at the ongoing recruitment rally at Alwar on Sunday but failed to act as the “army has no procedure or expertise to check doping”.    To make situation worse the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) refused to interfere saying that the recruitment in the army was not under their jurisdiction.Despite the fact that the candidates at the recruitment rallies were resorting to doping and also submitting forged documents at the recruitment rally in Alwar, the officers tried to underplay the irregularities and cited ill-equipment as the primary reason. Defence PRO Colonel SD Goswami confirmed that the MI recovered drugs including antibiotics, whiteners, cough syrups that contained alcohol contents, vitamin capsules and drugs that gave kick near the Indira Gandhi stadium boundary walls where the rally was being conducted since October 3. The rally, being organised by the army headquarters, would continue till October 13.   The army officers immediately informed the local police and the anti-doping agency for action. However, the candidates who had used them couldn’t be tracked. Even as a frisking was done on several candidates, nothing much was recovered. In view of the large number of candidates – around 7000 – the army didn’t find it possible to even frisk the candidates to check doping.Army’s additional director general (recruitment) Major General Kanwaljit Singh who visited Alwar’s recruitment rally on Monday said the NADA contacted by the recruitment officers too expressed its inability to extend a helping hand in the matter as it was not a sporting event. “Though initially NADA authorities agreed to the army’s request for a random check for doping they went back on their assurance saying that army recruitment was beyond their jurisdiction,” pointed out Singh.  Evidence suggested that drugs were also got injected by some aspirants, he revealed. It was not only the doping that remained unchecked. MI team recovered 50 bogus seals and 51 stamp- pads used in getting their documents attested by the aspirants. Goswami said that the army had registered an FIR with the local police for action into the bogus seals used in attesting the documents.Sources said that as the recruitment officers did not pursue the forgery incidents police found it convenient to hush them up. Alarmed by the development Brig. S.K. Sharma, deputy director, recruitment Zone (Rajasthan) rushed to Alwar on Monday. Significantly, of the entire recruitments from Rajasthan 40 per cent were from Alwar during the past three years, sources pointed out.advertisementlast_img read more

Lowes closing 31 Canadian properties 20 stores in US amid restructuring

first_imgBOUCHERVILLE, Que. – Lowe’s Companies Inc. is reducing its Canadian footprint by closing 31 properties across the country in a bid to streamline its business. The home improvement company said Monday in addition to closing 27 stores, it will also shutter two regional support centres in Mississauga, Ont. and St. John’s, N.L., a truss plant in St. John’s, N.L. and a block plant in Kamloops, B.C. as part of a plan to focus instead on the most profitable parts of its business.Among the 27 stores set to close by the end of January are nine in Ontario, nine in Quebec, six in Newfoundland and Labrador, two in Alberta and one in British Columbia.Sylvain Prud’homme, chief executive of Lowe’s Canada, did not say how many employees would be affected by the closures, but said the changes will allow the company to improve collaboration between its banners to better serve customers.“Everything will be done to ensure a smooth transition until the stores are closed, and Lowe’s Canada will support impacted employees, including by transferring eligible employees to other locations within our network whenever possible,” Prud’homme said in a statement. In addition to the 31 locations the brand is closing in Canada, it will also axe 20 stores in the U.S.The Canadian closures amount to a reduction of about three per cent of the brand’s total retail network square footage. The company currently has 68 Lowe’s and 430 Rona stores in the country — part of its network of 2,390 home improvement locations across North America, including Reno-Depot, Dick’s Lumber, Contractor First and Ace locations it also owns.Lowe’s Canadian business is based in Boucherville, Que. and has more than 630 corporate and independent affiliate dealer stores.David Soberman, a University of Toronto professor specializing in marketing and retail, said Lowe’s 2016 acquisition of Rona Inc. in a deal valued at $3.2 billion. has likely fuelled some of the Canadian cuts.“They probably had too many locations,” he said. “Now, this will mean people will have to drive a bit further to find a Lowe’s or a Rona store.”He said the company has also been facing fierce competition from fellow home improvement businesses Home Depot Inc. and Canadian Tire Inc. and to some extent, Costco Wholesale Corp. and Walmart Inc., which are “extremely powerful” and stock some home and garden products.E-commerce giants including Amazon Inc. have also posed a threat because of their efficiency, but Soberman said their impact on Lowe’s is limited because many construction and do-it-yourself products are bulky, heavy and cost more to ship — “not things that are suited to online retail.”Companies in this story: (TSX:CTC)last_img read more
