Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppNassau, Bahamas, October 31, 2016 – Employees of the CIBC FirstCaribbean are now better schooled about the disease of cancer, its prevention, and treatment. As a part of their activities to mark cancer month this October, CIBC FirstCaribbean invited the Cancer Society of the Bahamas to present educational seminars on aspects of the disease to staff. The sessions took place at the bank’s Shirley Street headquarters and the new CIBC FirstCaribbean Airport Industrial Park Centre. The events were part of a series of cancer awareness and response related activities throughout the month, including the bank’s celebrated annual ‘Walk for the Cure’ fun run/walk. Antionette Turnquest, Head of Human Resources at CIBC FirstCaribbean, stated that the activities were one aspect of the bank’s larger culture of employee wellness.“We have quite a number of wellness initiatives at the bank,” said Mrs. Turnquest. “Over the last year we have had many onsite fitness sessions at the various branches – aerobics and strength training; we have also had persons come in and talk to staff about proper nutrition and maintaining health habits and we have partnerships with local gyms. This is something that we do regularly because we want them to convert this into healthy lifestyles.”Mrs. Turnquest stated that keeping employees happy and healthy is a priority and she hopes that the Cancer seminars will make an impact. “We hope that persons use the information they are getting from these sessions and we hope that as much as possible we can help to prevent this disease from occurring in our staff. It’s so important that persons understand this disease. Studies show that genetically Bahamians are more prone to the disease. So, it’s important that persons get as much information as they can.”The two presentations walked staff through the basics of the disease, how to get screened, and how to lower your risk. Attending employees learnt the most prevalent cancers in the Bahamas – breast cancer and prostate cancer – as well as the role and function of the Cancer Society. Melissa Major, Programs Director at the Cancer Society said she is happy to see corporations take an interest.“We truly appreciate when companies make it a priority that their staff gets this education and we hope that other companies follow CIBC FirstCaribbean’s lead. This is a part of empowering people so that they know what the disease is, they know what to do, and how to lower their risk. Early detection is key and once they get that then we will be well on our way in terms of lowering our statistics.” Related Items:
Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppTurks and Caicos, April 25, 2017 – Grand Turk – The Ministry of Home Affairs late today confirmed that there is now a full investigation launched into the alleged sexual assault of a prison warden and that female guard has been given leave as she recuperates from the attack.Police today also confirmed the incident around 2:30 pm on Monday, where the prison officer was punched in the mouth. Their report also said the inmate, who was stopped and beaten by other inmates was carried away from the prison in a apparent unconscious state. The Ministry is seemingly unprepared to discuss procedure to protect female guards or offer clarity as to why the Cockburn Town Medical Center could not accommodate both reportedly injured individuals simultaneously. The family revealed that the officer was forced to wait at the Police Station for hours, being interviewed and was reportedly told that she could not attend doctor while the inmate was being treated at the hospital.Relatives reported that they considered this move to be further insult to injury of their already traumatized loved one. What the Ministry was ready to say is that the officer has been given leave of absence, offered medical care and counseling.Further comments, said the media release from Home Affairs, would come at the conclusion of the probe.#MagneticMedianews#femaleguardattackedinGTprison#inmatesrescueprisonguardfromattack Related Items:#femaleguardattackedinGTprison, #inmatesrescueprisonguardfromattack, #magneticmedianews Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp

The Bangladeshi diplomat who was arrested following an allegation raised by his ‘absconding’ domestic helper has been released from Vernon C Bain Correctional Centre, Bronx, New York, reports news agency UNB.Bangladesh consul general in New York Md Shameem Ahsan received deputy consul general at Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York Md Shahedul Islam at 8:20pm (Eastern Time) on Tuesday upon his release.Shameem Ahsan confirmed the latest development on Wednesday morning.First secretary Md Shamim Hossain and third secretary Asib Ahmed accompanied Shameem. This follows ‘sincere effort’ by the Embassy of Bangladesh in Washington DC and Consulate General in New York under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka to get him released at the earliest since the officer was arrested on 12 June by the local authorities following the allegation by his former domestic aide, Shameem said. The Foreign Affairs Ministry on Tuesday ‘summoned’ acting US Ambassador in Dhaka Joel Reifman and ‘strongly protested’ the detention of its diplomat in New York following the allegation raised by his ‘absconding’ domestic helper.Acting foreign secretary Mahbub-Uz-Zaman ‘summoned’ the US envoy to his office, conveyed Bangladesh’s displeasure to him and wanted to know about details of the matter. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a media release at 12:37am Wednesday saying, “We’ve reasons to believe the arrest is a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations 1963. We’ve lodged a strong protest with the Chargé d’ Affaires of the United States Embassy in Dhaka.”Bangladesh had earlier reported about the missing of the domestic helper who went missing about 13 months earlier (on 17 May, 2016) from Islam’s residence. The incident was immediately reported to the Department of State by the Bangladesh Consulate General in New York and also by the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC on 18 and 19 May, 2016 respectively. However, the Foreign Ministry here said no update had been received on this matter from the Department of State before Islam’s arrest. The Bangladeshi diplomat has been indicted for allegedly forcing a servant to work for his family in New York City without pay and assaulting him though Bangladesh consulate senses other motive.Prosecutors say Md Shahedul Islam, 45, was accused on Monday on grand larceny, assault, labour trafficking and other charges, reports the Associated Press (AP). An indictment is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, defendant faces up to 15 years in prison in such case if convicted.”It’s quite surprising that he has come up with so many allegations against his employer after about 13 months which suggests that he might have other motives in mind,” said Shameem Ahsan on Tuesday. He said he himself was present in the Court with his colleagues for hours yesterday and the judge left the Court shortly after the order (Bail subject to payment of cash US$25,000 or bond for US$50,000) and his (judge) presence was a requirement to secure his release on the same day.Besides, Shameem said, finding two solvent guarantors (with salary statements showing legal income) in addition to generating required cash and processing (bond) papers needed some time despite sincere efforts on the part of the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC, Consulate General and relatives of the Officer.”Bond paper is expected to be submitted today (Tuesday),” he added.Quoting prosecutors, the AP said Shahedul brought the Bangladeshi domestic aide Amin, to New York in between 2012 and 2013 to work as household help, but ‘took away his passport’.Prosecutors also said Amin ‘was not paid for his work, and threatened and beaten, sometimes with a wooden shoe. He escaped in 2016’.Islam is due back in court 28 June, the AP report says.
