DES MOINES — The latest crop report shows the corn is planted across the state and beans are not far behind.Just two percent of the corn planting remained going into last week and farmers are now looking for some good warm growing days. Ninety-six percent of the crop has emerged. That’s two weeks behind where we were last year at this time and 15 days behind the five-year average.The report shows still about five percent of the soybeans still remain to be planted. Eighty-one percent of the beans that have been planted have emerged. That’s also two weeks behind last year.The corn condition improved slightly this week — with 62 percent rated good to excellent. Sixty-three percent of the beans rate in good to excellent condition — up from 61 percent last week.
In Hoegbahn Township, District #2, near the SOS Children’s Village in Grand Bassa County, an evening hour lightning has reportedly killed a couple, the Daily Observer has gathered.The deceased are being identified only as Mr. and Mrs. Kweh.According to the information, the incident occurred recently about 5p.m. following a sudden rainstorm precipitated by violent lightning that struck to the disbelief of locals.An eyewitness only identified as John, informed the Daily Observer that prior to the death of the couple, community leaders had conducted an investigation between the late Kweh and one of his relatives (not named) in connection with the mysterysurrounding the disappearance of few ounces of gold.The resident revealed that during the interrogation, it was observed that the relative of Mr. Kweh, had reportedly disclosed being in possession of a little quantity of gold.One of the elders, who formed part of the investigation said the late Kweh’s relative confessed that he gave the quantity of the gold to the late Kweh for “safe keeping because his fellow gold miners had threatened to unmercifully tie and brutalize him if he failed to produce the gold he allegedly got from Camp No Way in the district.He said the owner of the gold told the investigators that thereafter, the late Kweh fled the scene with the gold and went to his village where the lightning reportedly struck and subsequently killed him and his wife.The deceased have since been buried.
